Characters played in Zodion: Mamushi Houjou | Ao no Exorcist | [personal profile] impurify

✖ CHARACTER:

Name: Hakuei Ren
Canon: Magi: the Labyrinth of Magic
PB/Image: here for canon manga image, here for anime style/color.
Info links: Magi Wiki
Canon Point: ch. 146, before arrival at the Emperor's funeral
Gender & Sex: female
Age: 21
Birthdate/Sign: non-canonical birthday choice --> January 27th, Aquarius. Hakuei is caring, and thoughtful, and she values independence so much she made sure to teach her little brother how to survive on his own, imperial prince or no. Once a friend she is loyal to the end and she is cooperative in diplomacy and alliances both. However, she lacks confidence at times and is uncertain about what is the just path to follow. She also is unwilling to share some of her burdens, preferring to hide them and appear strong. She is courteous, involved in magic and politics, and takes up humanitarian issues as well. Also ironically enough Aquarius is an Air sign, and her djinn commands the power of wind.
Tattoo: ~3 inches in diameter, on her left shoulderblade
Suitability: n/a

Power: Using her metal vessal that is connected to the djinn whose dungeon she conquered, Paimon, the Djinn of Maniacal Love and Chaos, Hakuei can access the djinn's wind powers to summon tornadoes. However, her magoi, (the canon's magic level, essentially), is not high compared to other dungeon capturers, and she can only maintain these winds for a very short period of time, the maximum being a minute or so before she runs out of power. If possible I'd like to keep this canon power, and if it needs to be dampened, her tornadoes could either last even less time or they could be less in scale. More information here.

Personality:

The first thing to know about Hakuei is her family, because her family defines a lot of who she is and what her motives are. Born to the emperor of the Kou Empire, Hakuei was the third child, the only girl, and the First Imperial Princess. It can be assumed she lived a life of luxury with her seemingly doting mother and her father, the Emperor, as well as her elder and younger siblings. It was shattered however, when her elder brothers, Hakuren and Hakuyuu, as well as her father, were killed in a fire by what she was led to believe was retaliation for her father's expansionist foreign policy. If she was happy before that, she was not so naively so any longer.

Her mother remarried to her father's brother, who ascended the throne. In her absence Hakuei stepped in to that maternal role for her only remaining immediate family, her younger brother Hakuryuu. Taking on the burden of "mother" as much as "big sister", Hakuei is normally very level-headed, calm, and gentle. She has patience and knows that her position means she has to be careful about what she says and how she acts. She sheltered her younger brother from what she could, the protector without even realizing he was actually protecting her from the truth of what their mother truly was the entire time. She took to her role completely, raising Hakuryuu to particularly value independence and self-sufficiency, to be able to take care of himself, cook, clean, even though he is an Imperial Prince.

Hakuei grew in to something of a pacifist, tired of the civil wars, in-fighting, and strife that plagued the world. It isn't that she refuses to fight- no, she is a general in the Kou Empire's army, she conquered a dungeon in order to gain the power of a djinn, and she will use arms to defend and attack. She'd simply prefer not to, if she can help it. Violence, for her, is a last resort when diplomacy fails. Why, then, join the army in the first place? She could likely have stayed in the palace, sought a political marriage like the Imperial Princesses second through seventh. But Hakuei chose to involve herself in something full of what she disagrees with, to place herself as a general above war-mongering and violent men of her Empire in order to try and lessen the violence. To use her position as general to try and use diplomacy to bring other countries in to the Kou Empire, rather than bloodshed.

Respect and loyalty, power, is something Hakuei desires not through fear and force, but through words and kindness. Despite the importance she places on self-sufficiency, she does not view it as shameful or weak to reply on others or be supported by them. While she thinks it valuable to be able to watch out for yourself, she knows not everyone can do everything on their own, and that is what friends and allies are for. Her own "household", the people who wield "household vessels", weapons connected to her djinn's power, number over a hundred, a very rare thing in her world where most people seem to be supported by one or two, but always less than ten household members. This is testament not just to the fecundity of her djinn, but to the allegiance she is able to inspire in others and how willing she is to support others, and accept their support in turn. Later in canon when her younger brother begins to confuse "independence" and "isolation", Hakuei becomes more and more distressed at his inability to accept the help and guidance of others, worried greatly that his "household" doesn't consist of people he is bonded to, but monsters he artificially created with his djinn.

Hakuei is hardly without flaws, as nice as she can seem. While she is primarily not confrontational or angry/aggressive she has been shown losing her temper and attacking in a rage when she's confronted with the wounded bodies of people she cares for and when her little brother is threatened. For her own sake, her own wounds or maltreatment, she will not attack or lose control on her emotions- but for the sake of those she is loyal to, she will show the full brunt of anger no matter the long term consequence.

She is still growing as a leader even now, and still makes mistakes. In her desire to use diplomacy over violence, to accept others rather than fight them, she can be naive yet. Despite knowing that one of her underlings in the Western army was violent and had already provoked a fight with others she was trying to make peace with, she still put him in charge of the army while she was away- quite a bad choice seeing as he then betrayed her and tried to have her killed and her death pinned on the enemy clan as an excuse to wipe them out. She was even thinking that the man who betrayed her and tried to have her killed would honorably duel her- and was shocked when he instead had her shot down by archers. In her desire to believe the best in others and think them worthy of trust, she has put her trust in the wrong people before, and likely will again by gambling on the inherent goodness in people she wishes to believe in.

Her elder cousin Kouen's dream of uniting the world under him as a single nation is something Hakuei seems willing to fight for, to believe in. She acknowledges that everyone is different culturally, but believes that at the core, everyone is the same, and that people are meant to be one, not to cause strife with one another. She is willing to forgive trespasses against her both petty and serious in order to reach understanding, but that, too, is taken to a bit of an extreme at times and can be a fault when she is perceived as too kind and too forgiving by others to be capable of a strong leadership. She is not treated very well by her own mother, or all of her cousins at court, (despite being legitimate ranked soldiers and heirs, she and her younger brother are consigned to walk behind the current Emperors children no matter their rank, for example), but does not seem to hold any grudges against them, nor does she seem terribly bitter at those who she thinks killed her own father. Believing he was assassinated by members of a country he conquered, she does not seem to think her father or his killers were in the wrong- she sees it as a prime example of people not being able to understand one another and expansion that is carried out for the right reasons but in the wrong way. She is not ruthlessly ambitious to the extent that she wishes to be Queen of the world herself, but she is ambitious enough to pursue the power of a djinn, to become a general, to risk her life and health for someone else she believes in to take that role with her supporting them.

She has worries of her own she strives to hide however, for fear of appearing weak. If she feels stressed or overwhelmed she has to put things off, unable to deal with pressure as well under others eyes, leading her to dismiss others until a set time she can come up with a decision she feels is right. Hakuei operates better when she has time to think things through- when she doesn't, she can still act, but she is more inclined to make judgements that are ones she regrets later, (see putting that treacherous lieutenant in charge of her army when she has to dash off somewhere). Even when it comes to her brother, whom she loves and worries about most, she cannot make a decision when confronted with the full force of what he is becoming in later canon, consumed with hatred and accusing their mother of murdering their father and elder brothers. Even though what he needed in that moment was some kind of action from her, Hakuei could only beg some time to think it over.

When she is off the battlefield and it comes to daily matters, Hakuei is a very calm and diligent person, rather average in behavior it seems. She takes care of lots of things herself, (though she's not so good at cooking), that Imperial princesses aren't expected to do, and she enjoys spending time with those she cares for, training, and also uses her free time towards her work. Despite people's expectations of how a woman like her, of her rank, should behave, she does not change how she acts to fit others standards, and even takes pride in some things others are a little taken aback by, for example the number of scars on her body. She can be a little air-headed on occasion when it comes to talking about men or other mundane things. She's trying to change the world, but it's one step at a time, and she knows it.

"Zodion" First-Person Network Entry:

[The video feed flickers on and comes in to focus on a young woman seated, back straight, her hands pressed together in a gesture of respect as she bows her head.]

Greetings, citizens of Zodion and gods of this world. I am Hakuei Ren, first Imperial princess of the Kou Empire and general of the Western army. I am honored that you have chosen to grace me with your invitation and company.

[She raises her gaze then, and though she speaks politely and her expression is kind, there is steel in her eyes.]

However, I must ask that you return me to my world. I have much to accomplish there yet, and though I am moved by your plea, I cannot begin to commit myself to another cause before I have finished what has begun in my own own. If you have the power to bring me here, I ask you use it to send me back.

[Head bows again, tone still respectful.]

I will await your answer and invitation to speak further on this matter.

"Zodionlogs" Third-Person Prose Entry:

The smell of death, cloying and sickly sweet pervaded the palace no matter how the incense strove to hide it- it only made it worse to Hakuei's senses, the sweet odor of the smoke trying to mask the unmistakable smell of decay. She had been to too many battlefields, seen too many dead, to mistake it under the guise of perfume. Even the princesses who had been married off without ever holding a sword in their hands, the sheltered, delicate Imperial flowers her uncle had sired, couldn't be fooled by the illusion of normalcy as their group made its way over the polished marble floors towards the grand hall where the Emperor lay dead.

The somberness that should have been present in a funeral procession had been laid aside- no, torn asunder. Perhaps it would have been understandable if she and her brother had seemed less than inconsolable, after all, they were not his sons, they were his brother's, and his brother had been dead some ten years now. But even the more legitimate heirs... Kouen looked collected, reserved, and dignified, the most mournful any of them seemed. His brothers Kouha and Koumei flanked him, one looking ready for a fight and the other strained. The princesses followed them in front of her, silk sleeves held in front of their noses with nervous, sick looks on their faces. Which left her, looking perhaps the most contrite of them all for the man who wasn't even her father, and Hakuryuu on her right, anger fairly steaming off of him.

Perhaps the others couldn't see it, but she, who had practically raised him, could feel the wrongness that had been growing in him since he'd joined her army at Tenzan six months ago. He had begun withdrawing from her, hadn't been training with Seishun, hadn't bothered to barely even speak to the Kouga cavalry. Her surrounded himself with the dripping, fungal creatures his djinn allowed him to control, and he-

Hakuei found her fingers slipping in to the sash of her robes for a comforting brush against the golden handle of her metal vessel, a reminder of Paimon's presence, the power she granted her. That power she would lend to Kouen, for his dream, for a single world in which there was no more conflict, in which all people were truly one, under a single king strong enough to unite them. And then-

Eyes that she didn't remember closing snapped open, breath filling her lungs in a sudden gasp as a sharp pain lanced in to her back- half a moment and she'd thought it was an arrow, Ryosai's arrow, betrayal in barbed and fletched form. A nightmare she'd had more than once, but it was no dream, no-

There were goosebumps on her skin, laid out on a cold stone slab as if she were the dead one, not the Emperor of the Kou Empire. Eyes wide in a panic she was keeping under wraps in the grip of her hands, white knuckled, on the slab corners, a cold sweat threatening to break out, Hakuei turned her head, craning to try and see what it was that had pained her. Brushed her clothing aside to find the pulsing mark on her shoulder, two sharp, jagged lines as if rent by a claw, but the pain was fading and it took on the appearance of ink, rather than bloody flesh.

Hakuei waited, moving slowly to draw out the flabellum from her robes, to cast around for signs of life. She was alone- alone in a stone tower surrounded by water, a city spread out in the distance. If she hadn't know better she might have thought herself in another necropolis, another city of the dead in a dungeon of a djinn, but the Kou Magi had yet to ask her to capture another, (and surely wouldn't, she knew her own limits, and she had the magoi for Paimon but not another), and even if he had, she hadn't been heading to one- no, she recalled it vividly, she was on the stairs, she was heading to a funeral.

Instead, she was picking up a letter from a carved alter, brows furrowing as she read through it quickly- then read it again, slower. A plea for help from "The Twelve", having been chosen for her "conviction", to aid this world? And what was this odd device waiting for her in that box so obviously laid out for her? It responded to only the touch of her fingers, a curious menu of colors and options she didn't have the time to decipher. Not now.

Now, Hakuei kept her weapon in hand, but lowered at her side- she did not need to come off the aggressor here. Twelve? It was they she needed to discuss things with, to negotiate- after that, she could let herself stop and wonder how she had truly arrived here, she could let herself worry for her brother, for Kouen's ascension to Emperor, for what she would do when confronted with her mother after all this time- but that time had yet to come.

For now, she descended the stairs.
